Measles Outbreak in Mexico Raises Concerns
The country’s low immunization rates have positioned Mexico as the leading nation in the Americas for measles cases.
The initial case, identified in February of last year, was in the northwestern state of Chihuahua. This border state saw a sharp increase in cases throughout 2025, with over 580 confirmed by late April and nearly 4,000 by August.
In terms of fatalities, 28 deaths were verified during the 2025–2026 period across seven states: Chihuahua (21), Jalisco (2), Sonora (1), Durango (1), Michoacan (1), Tlaxcala (1), and Mexico City (1).
On Feb. 4, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) issued an epidemiological alert across the Americas due to the ongoing cases and emerging outbreaks in 2025, noting that the trend seems likely to continue into 2026.
According to the health organization, the countries most impacted by the resurgence of measles were Mexico, Canada, and the United States.
This surge in cases arrives ahead of the FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by these three nations from June 11 to July 19.
In response, the head of government of Mexico City urged both the federal government and FIFA to intensify the vaccination campaign for the anticipated three million tourists expected to visit the country during the tournament.
